“The ConWip approach has been applied in the Thales’ workshops within the defense mission systems in a technical repair environment: small flows, high product mix, difficulty to develop versatility, erratic input flows, highly variable routing times…

In this context, Wipsim helped us a lot with the ConWip loops dimensioning, the environment and constraints are such unstable that it certainly was not easy.

Additionally, the WipSim tool’s asset is in its ability to quickly design the behavior of a ConWip working line and do so with sufficient precision and consistency to carry out parametric impact analysis of the line (change of resources, improvement of a routing operation variability, development of the versatility…).”

“The ConWip approach has been applied in the AREVA Saint Marcel site. This site designs and manufactures the heavy equipment for nuclear power plants, namely reactor vessels, steam generators, pressurizers, etc.

The ConWip has been implemented in the welding and prototyping area. This area has several functions : it is the place where the welders do their qualifications, where the operating procedures are validated and where the control samples are manufactured to be tested in the plants.

The Wipsim simulator was necessary for the correct dimensioning of the work in process, and to ensure a risk-free transition between the initial situation and the lines management with the ConWip pull system”

In the context of a line set-up of the production processes, we have been led to work with the ConWip approach, simple and powerful method to control our work in process and lead times.

The simulation of the line has been done with the WipSim software, which allowed us to confirm our supply dimensioning, but also to easily target the flow bottlenecks and to establish a roadmap of various projects to run onto the line to improve its capacity. »

Frequently asked questions about SmartWip control panels

The SmartWip digital twin projects you into the future from the current situation, and forecasts the state of your workshop in the next days. It also gives you visibility on the lead times of each Work Order, on the queues’ congestion, and the quantities that will be produced within each family.

No, SmartWip can be deployed in stand-alone mode, with production orders created and managed manually directly in the application.

SmartWip is based on the best practices of visual management on the shop floor, so it will use the information that is useful to you in your day-to-day production management. SmartWip is highly customizable, and each user can make his or her own choices in terms of the data to be interfaced. For example, order or production order numbers (or repair order numbers in the case of MRO), customer names or codes, item codes, item families, part quantities, batch numbers, references to routings and their operations, as well as their operating times, etc…

Both Yes and No… the purpose of SmartWip is neither to offer automated scheduling of production orders suggested by MRP (PIC/PDP/CBN) nor to optimize their sequence on the basis of pre-set constraints. SmartWip is first and foremost a workshop management tool designed to provide visibility of work in progress and queues on the shop floor. However, it also incorporates a simulation engine that continuously calculates the forecast release dates for finite-capacity production orders. Thanks to this real-time visibility of the position of production orders and their forecast delivery times, users can easily make informed scheduling and control choices, knowing instantly the impact on delivery schedules/performance/fulfillment of commitments.

Yes, if the application is installed on a server with remote access, it can be used from any workstation that can connect to it, locally or remotely. As the application is fully integrated into the customer’s IT ecosystem, it complies with the security and access rules in place.

Yes, SmartWip is designed for collaborative use, so it can be used by different people who contribute to the management of the business, from different workstations and at the same time.

The Origins of SmartWip

📅 Initially, SmartWip was designed to digitize paper CONWIP workshop management boards. This development was in response to the users of the CONWIP pull system method who wanted to digitalize their processes.

💡 The software aimed to meet the specific needs of the industrial users of that time for managing and planning workshops using the pull system method.

Evolution of Needs and Software

🔄 Over time, the demands of users and the capabilities of our planning tool have evolved. Thanks to regular updates, SmartWip has technically adapted to support not only the CONWIP method but also other flow management methods.

Can I use SmartWip even if I use the push flow system?

✅ Yes! ✅

🔧 SmartWip stands out for its flexibility and open approach. It functions like an interactive whiteboard where users have complete freedom to configure their columns, name their categories, and choose the tickets to integrate. This software imposes few restrictions, making it compatible with various flow management methodologies, including the push flow system.

🏆 This is also why SmartWip can be considered a light MES for planning. Close to the field, simple, and highly adaptable, it complements traditional IS (MES, ERP, APS, …) which have a broader functional coverage but are also more complex, more specific, and more expensive!

📈 Today, many companies use the SmartWip solution without using CONWIP.

No more headaches from (re)planning reworks thanks to the Rework option!

Activate the Rework option in SmartWip:

  • When you send a Manufacturing Order (MO) back to an earlier stage in the production line, all the steps between where the MO should be now (if everything had gone as planned) and where the MO was sent back to become mandatory again. These steps will be marked as “to be completed.”
  • The MO immediately becomes a priority, taking the lead in the queue to minimize delays while maintaining precise organization and clear scheduling.
  • The integrated delay simulation in SmartWip also allows you to instantly know the impact on other MOs, providing dynamic, reliable, relevant, and accurate information on all affected deadlines.

If you disable the Rework option in SmartWip:

  • For those who do not need to prioritize or redo all the upstream operations during a rework, simply disable this option in the settings.
  • When you send an MO back in the process, SmartWip will only consider the local rework action, and the MO will resume its original course once the rework is completed. This option is ideal when the rework is minor.
  • Even if Rework is disabled, the simulation remains active. Thus, even when a rework occurs, the simulation will continuously update.

Managing Rework in SmartWip means less stress because you have:

A clear view of the impacts of your progress and reworks.

An accurate assessment of the consequences of a rework on the entire production/repair process.

More reliable information for you and your customers, as well as better-managed delivery deadlines.
